Understanding Hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition that results from an overproduction of melanin, which causes darker patches of skin to form. This discoloration can happen for various reasons, including sun exposure, hormonal changes, aging, acne scarring, or certain medications. Hyperpigmentation can present as dark spots (age spots or liver spots), melasma, or post-inflammatory pigmentation from acne or other skin trauma.
Sun exposure is the leading cause of hyperpigmentation, as UV rays trigger melanin production in the skin. Hormonal changes, such as those during pregnancy or from birth control, can also lead to a specific type of hyperpigmentation called melasma. Additionally, injury or inflammation to the skin, such as from acne or cuts, can cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). While hyperpigmentation is not harmful, it can impact your appearance and be difficult to treat without professional help.
